Work is the blackmail of survival
Cagliari, Sardinia
Generative music for degenerative minds.
English
It is a live machine before it is a repertoire. Sequencers, synths, drum machines and real-time video processing are wired into one system, governed by generative and deconstructive processes: material is grown by rules rather than written, then pushed until it degrades — glitch, saturation, rhythmic grids that assemble, discipline themselves and collapse. Sound and visuals share the same instabilities, so the image fractures where the sound does. Nothing is played back: each performance is a different state of the same process, and it dissolves as it is made.
The project moves in chapters, each a different setting of the same machine. The most recent is UTNAPISHTIM — When the world was too loud (2026): a drift of sediments between fragmented rhythmic structures and dreamlike soundscapes, where every signal is a compromise with the code and with the context.
It will be said that the name of a project or the title of a work is merely a label; here, instead, it is a thesis, for the simple reason that work is not the subject the music speaks about but the condition under which it is permitted to speak — the ransom paid for the right to exist; so that every element of the sound becomes a figure of that mechanism: repetition stands to obligation, distortion to fatigue, and deconstruction, which strictly speaking would be a failure, to the only marked emergency exit.
First presented in 2019 with a live video and an A/V performance promo, the project has since travelled Sardinian and Italian independent venues and festivals — among them Inaudito Errante and Sa Domu in Cagliari, Oliveto Sinergico in San Sperate, and LÀMINE at the Teatro di Sant’Eulalia — as the solo counterpart to Casti’s work with Dalila Kayros and Alessandro Carboni.
Italiano

The name
The phrase comes from Raoul Vaneigem, Banalités de base (part II), published in Internationale Situationniste no. 8, January 1963: «…dans un monde où le travail est le chantage à la survie» — in a world where work is the blackmail of survival. It left the text long ago and went on to live on walls, posters and banners.
